In Spring 2025, I set out to accomplish one of my biggest goals—writing and illustrating my own book. Inspired by my favorite movie Chinatown (1974), I wrote a story about William Mulholland and his journey to bring water to Los Angeles as well as his subsequent downfall.
To bring Mulholland and his story to life, I immersed myself in research: reading countless history books, digging through the Los Angeles Archives for authentic documents, and even tracking down exact news articles from specific dates. I visited the Million Dollar Theater —once home to Mulholland’s office during his time as superintendent of the LA Water Department. It was a challenging journey, but an incredibly rewarding one.
This book is perfect for parents who want to discuss the ethical limits of progress and the balance of ambition and responsibility with their children or dog! Also perfect if you like the movie Chinatown. I had so much fun writing this story, and I hope you enjoy reading it just as much!
